As a maths teacher in a mainstream secondary school, one of my key responsibilities was to ensure that all students, regardless of their starting point, met or exceeded their target grades. This required a strong understanding of the various exam boards and their specific requirements, as well as a flexible approach to teaching that catered to diverse learners.
With different exam boards offering slightly varying syllabi, I made sure to tailor my lessons to align with each board's specific content, assessment style, and exam techniques. Whether students were studying for GCSEs with AQA, Edexcel, or OCR, I was able to adapt my teaching to cover the key skills, topics, and exam formats for each board. This included detailed knowledge of the types of questions that appeared in past papers, ensuring that students were well-prepared for their exams.
For students with higher target grades, I focused on developing their problem-solving skills and exam strategies, encouraging them to tackle challenging questions and think critically. For those working towards foundation or lower-tier grades, I broke down complex concepts into manageable steps, using a variety of visual aids and hands-on activities to build their understanding and confidence.
In addition, regular progress checks, targeted revision sessions, and personalised feedback were essential in helping students stay on track. I made sure to regularly review mock exam results and adjust lesson plans based on individual needs, helping each student stay focused on their goals.
Ultimately, my approach was centred around ensuring that every student, no matter their ability, had the tools and support they needed to meet their target grades. By understanding the requirements of each exam board and tailoring my teaching to suit, I was able to guide students through their learning journey and help them achieve their full potential.
