Fully qualified teacher with over 20 years’ experience tutoring French GCSE and A’level and English GCSE which has empowered my students to succeed and pursue their preferred higher and further education goals. I also cover Spanish GCSE and more recently Key Stage 3 English and A’level, which have proved equally successful as attested by my students’ great marks. People have said of me as a teacher that I am empathic, patient, inspiring, with good listening skills and the ability to spot areas for development on which to give constructive feedback. With French and Spanish GCSE and A-level I discuss with the student where they need the most help or challenge in their coursework and tailor the lessons accordingly by preparing some extra teaching material and resources as well as practice exercises to enable them to apply what they have learnt. I urge them to speak in the language all the time with prompting and support. I use quizzes, activities, games and role plays as tools, thereby providing fun learning by discovery. We study past papers from their examination board and I guide them through practising and fulfilling all of the learning outcomes. With English GCSE and A-level we analyse the student’s set literature texts and drill down to the core meanings, interpretations and themes, as well as their social, cultural and historical contexts. We have lively discussions to enhance comprehension and establish the student’s position on related topics. I am well read in the classics as well as adjustable and committed to mastering new texts. My passion is Shakespeare plays of which I have read over 25 and more recently Chaucer. We approach practical criticism and appreciation of poetry in a systematic fashion and spend time exploring meaning, comparing and contrasting different texts. In language matters I encourage self-correction in the student and often elicit the correct answer. My qualification as a proofreader has given me a thorough understanding of spelling, grammar and nuances of meaning which I instil in my learners. I acquaint myself with their examination board specifications and I train them to achieve the best marks by practising at past papers. The student will answer exam questions independently and we look at them together to consolidate understanding. We then build on these skills, so the student is accomplished at writing convincing argumentative essays and evaluative and creative writing. I am happy to hone their skills in these areas and pass on my experiences as an active member of a creative writing group for nearly 3 years.
